After Top-Notch COVID Care, Trump Strips Chance of Relief Away from Millions of Families
After Donald Trump stopped negotiations with the Democrats on a COVID-19 relief package that would provide a second stimulus check to Americans struggling to get by, expand benefits for more than 12 million unemployed people, and provide more tests to stop the spread of coronavirus, Community Change Action President Lorella Praeli and Community Change Action Vice President Dorian Warren said:
“Donald Trump’s call to stop negotiations on a life-saving COVID-19 relief package is an astoundingly cruel move, even by his standards. Even after the president contracted the virus himself and had every resource available to him to receive top notch medical care, he has no empathy for the millions of Americans who have lost their loved ones, their health, their jobs and their homes during this pandemic. In the 72 hours that Trump was in the hospital, an additional 100,000 Americans were diagnosed with COVID. It is clear he does not believe that the rest of us deserve the care that he received and he is willing to let millions more suffer to energize his base.
He refuses to take leadership in this national moment of crisis and instead continues to play politics with our lives. But we are coming together to end this reign of brutality. Already, millions of us have cast a vote to save our lives. We are also voting to replace the do-nothing Republican Senate with one that will ensure relief to all of us — including essential workers, Black, Brown, immigrant and low-income families.
We are fighting for access to health care, child care and income support. We are fighting for Black lives. We are fighting for access for all of us, no matter where we were born. We are fighting for a system that allows us to thrive in the best times and holds us up during the worst times, not one that leaves us feeling every day like the floor is going to fall out from under us with nothing to catch us.”
