Michigan Primary Voters Motivated to Fight for an Economy that Works for All

Community Change Action/Voters, Michigan United Action, Michigan Liberation reached 65,000 voters in harder-to-reach persuasion districts by August 6 primary

Michigan’s primary election boasted key races for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and county seats – acting as a bellwether for what’s to come this November. Community Change Voters and Community Change Action worked in partnership with local organizations including Michigan United Action and Michigan Liberation to reach nearly 65,000 Michigan voters by the August 6 primary.

Together, we made more than 700,000 phone calls and door knocks leading up to the primary, and had more than 27,000 conversations with voters through Community Change Voters’ and Community Change Action’s relational organizing program, getting a real sense of the issues that were top of mind for voters. Those included healthcare, social security, wages, and the cost of housing. Overall, voters are motivated to fight for a future where all of us can thrive, our rights and freedoms are protected, and our elected officials work towards real solutions – and they’re rejecting MAGA extremism.

With canvass operations in areas like Grand Rapids, Flint, and Lansing, our partners focused on those harder-to-reach, infrequent voters who make up the margin of victory in these elections. As many voters of color and low-income voters have moved to these suburbs due to gentrification, housing was also among the top issues.

Community Change Voters made IDs for both Democratic candidate Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Vice President Kamala Harris. As one of the first organizations to start making IDs for Harris in the state after President Bident stepped aside, we talked to 10,163 Michiganders who are committed to voting for Harris in November, 25% of those Black voters, 58% women voters, 12% Latino voters, 18% young voters.

With the Taking Back Our Power Coalition, Community Change Action and our partners on the ground also worked to move voters concerned with high electric bills, power outages, and corporate influence over their elected officials.

Community Change Voters’ and Community Change Action’s outreach efforts, with our partners, will continue through the November election with plans to knock over 1 million doors to reach Michigan voters this cycle through canvasses, relational organizing, house parties, and other creative events that organize people who are often left out of the conversation to make their voices heard and fight for their future.

Community Change Voters and Community Change Action will be hosting a media roundtable with our partners Michigan United Action and Michigan Liberation on August 14, 2024 at 1:00PM ET time for press to have a chance to dive deep into the state’s electoral landscape heading into the November elections, top issues we’re hearing from swing voters at the doors, and upcoming voter outreach events. You can RSVP here to join.
