Community Change Action Statement on Senate CTC Vote
On Thursday, August 1, we expect that the Senate will hold a vote on the House-passed Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act. Community Change Action Co-President Dorian Warren said:
“Thanks to grassroots organizing that never let up, Congress has a chance to pass the only bill this year that would meaningfully address child poverty in our country. The enhanced child tax credit in the Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act would reach 16 million children in low-income families –including 1 in 3 Black and Latino kids – in its first year alone. Direct cash has been proven to not only help families make ends meet, but has also helped them build a stronger financial foundation for their family and spend more at local businesses.
At a time when inflation, the cost of groceries, and skyrocketing rent and child care costs are drowning our families, voters will be watching to see whether their Senator will throw them a lifeline to keep their heads above water or leave them out to sea.
No child in one of the richest countries in the world should be living in poverty. This enhanced CTC would be a down payment on an economy where we can all thrive.”
