Judge Hanen Decision Underscores Urgency of Permanent Roadmap to Citizenship

Today, Judge Hanen blocked the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program from going forward. In response, Community Change Action Co-President Lorella Praeli issued the following statement:

“Undocumented immigrants need a permanent pathway to citizenship now. Today’s decision by Judge Hanen is yet another turn in the emotional rollercoaster our families live day to day, at the whim of the courts and political parties. Hundreds of thousands of DACA holders have been able to live, work and build lives in the U.S. because of the protections granted by the program. Unfortunately, thousands of new applicants will not be able to do the same, and even current DACA holders must still live in fear that a judge could end their protection at any moment.

Republicans have held citizenship hostage for decades, failing to offer any good-faith solutions for the millions of people who are vulnerable to detention and deportation in this country. The urgency could not be more clear: We need a permanent path to citizenship now. President Biden and Democrats must take action. They have the vehicle in the reconciliation package. It’s time to get this done at last.”
